Express yourSLF

‘Tins & Needles’ was the first party we put on in Berlin. It had a simple concept: Cans of beer and vinyl sets. This was fun but somewhat limited. Mostly because it was in a hostel in Mitte but also because Berliner Kindl tastes better from a bottle. Back in Ireland though, cans are more than just containers – they’re a culture.

In September 2017 Sean Beeby aka Edmondson, Lorcan O’Mahony aka Turk, and I planned our inaugural ‘Some Lush Frequencies’ party: a sweaty all night affair at repeat in Kreuzberg. The name came from an acronym of the first initials of each of our names and I feel it’s ambiguous enough to allow us to put on any style of music (provided it sounds lush), a liberty we utilise regularly. You are most likely to find yourself hearing deep or funky house at our nights, but we have had DJs play everything from disco and Italo to techno and garage.
.
We expanded this year with a clubnight at Loftus hall with Sean’s label Lissoms and a few open air sessions with Fucks & Friends: a crew of German DJs with a knack for setting up debauched discotheques. Running open airs is another kettle of fish altogether. A lot more can go wrong with an outdoor party. You have to put everything together from scratch and then take it apart again when the police inevitably shut things down. Die Polizei appeared twice last time, once to tell us to turn it down and make jokes about people smoking too many “sport cigarettes” (their words) and then a second time to forcefully end the fun. We decided to take a break from open airs while we await a massive fine that we were threatened with. But we’ll be back…
.
We wanted to host unique parties where everyone is welcome, with friendliness being key. So many Berlin clubs have a strict door policy and we felt there was room for something more inclusive. Keeping the events affordable is another aspect we feel adds to that. We also like to put record sleeves on display in front of the decks to spread the word on the music we play and so the crowd can appreciate the artwork it comes with.
.
We try to create a platform for other DJs too. If you have a passion for music and mixing tunes, feel free to get in touch and we can try to fit you in a lineup. We take over repeat on the first Friday of the month every month, so come down and see what we’re about!
.
Another project stemming from my love of music is ‘Fosills’, a live set where I mess around with samplers and synths, hoping the crowd are having as much fun as I am! The tracks are based around loops and sequences which I try to manipulate into a coherent tune. It’s still early days with this but I am constantly honing it down. I play live at every SLF event, bringing a different piece of gear to our residency each month in order to challenge myself and make it more interesting.

We’ve got a rave at Ziegrastrasse 11 coming up next week on August 24th. The club has decided to stop having a name for an undisclosed reason, but you may recognise it as the pineapple themed venue directly opposite Sounds. This party is looking likely to be our biggest yet, with a stacked lineup headed by Cedric Maison and Endian. These guys have both made massive contributions to electronic music. Cedric Maison co-founded and continues to run Hypercolour records and several sub-labels. Looking over their back catalogue it’s easy to see why his gig calendar is so full. Endian is the deep house alias of George Levings who is part of drum & bass outfit Commix. They released on Goldie’s label Metalheadz and were hugely influential in that scene. Endian, however, is all about atmospheric yet thumping 4/4 beats. More details and full lineup here: https://www.facebook.com/events/2078518668887132

On a final note, we wouldn’t have gotten anywhere if it wasn’t for all our amazing friends who have DJ’d at, helped with, promoted, attended, danced at and even hosted our parties. Too many to name but I’ll try anyway:
